Developed in the early 20th Century by Josef Pilates this holistic movement method of physical exercise is designed to lengthen, strengthen, and balance the body.

It was believed that he was a sickly child who worked very hard in his youth at imporving his health and fitness using various physical training regimes available in Germany, and it was from these he developed his own work.

Pilates emigrated to the USA in the early 1920s after the first World War with his wife Clara, and together they developed and taught the method in their 'body- conditioning gym' in New York in 1926.

Contrology as it was originally known required complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. The original principles still used today include Breath, Concentration, Centring, Control, Precision and Flow.

Originally favoured by dancers, these days Pilates is used by many physiotherapists as corrective exercise for injuries and by athletes to maintain physical wellbeing.

Pilates uses specially designed equipment and mat exercises to help develop a strong core and improve posture whilst heightening ones mind-body connection.
